Issue:
Why do I see intermittent Perflib errors in the Windows® Event Viewer?
Resolution:
If the system evidences intermittent Perflib errors in the Event Viewer, a nonresponsive performance library is likely being polled for data. This happens when a third-party perfomance library is faulted or dependent on services not available, such as remote access or routing. Therefore, these libraries hang indefinitely while failing or attempting to retrieve the unavailable data.

This problem can be avoided entirely by using Microsoft® Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI). This utility comes standard with Windows 2000 and is also available as an added installation for Windows® NT 4.0 (SP4 or later). WMI better handles errors from third-party performance libraries and does not flood the event log. To resolve this problem manually, identify the specific performance library causing the errors by double-clicking an error in the Event Viewer. Then disable that library by installing the Extensible Counter List utility (ExCtrLst) that can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/exctrlst-o.asp

Once installed, run the utility, find the associated performance library, select it, and uncheck the Enable box. The problem should be resolved within a few monitoring intervals.
