Issue:
Which NFS protocol should be used when mounting a remote server?
Resolution:

The correct protocol to choose when mounting a share from an NFS server depends on what protocol the server exports and which versions that the client system can mount.

Server:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 default defaults to exporting version 2
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 defaults to exporting version 3.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 defaults to exporting version 3, but can export version 4.

For other operating systems, please consult your vendor for which version of NFS can be configured to be shared.

Client:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 family can mount NFS version 2 and NFS version 3 servers
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 family can mount NFS version 2 and NFS version 3 servers
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 family can mount NFS version 2, NFS version 3 and NFS version 4 servers

For other operating systems, consult your vendor for which version(s) of NFS can be mounted.
