Issue:
Why does the installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 fail on my HP xw6200 workstation?
Resolution:
Release Found: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 WS Update 3 EM64T

Symptom: The installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 WS Update 3 EM64T fails to install with a "No Drives Found" error message.

The systems are either the HP xw6200 or xw8200 workstations. They are equipped with 4GB to 16GB of RAM and are using Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives.

Solution / Workaround: This issue can be resolved using one of two methods:

Method 1:
  • Boot to the first installation CD.
  • Press the F1 key.
  • At the boot prompt, type linux mem=1024M and press ENTER.
  • Proceed with installation. The SATA hard drives should now be recognized.

Method 2:
  • Reduce the amount of physical RAM to 3GB or less by removing the memory modules. Once the installation completes, you can place them back into the system.

This problem only shows up during installation, so you should be able to use all of your system's memory once the installation is completed.
