Issue:
How do you specify a workspace for an application to start when using GNOME?
Resolution:

You can start the applications in the required workspace and use the command gnome-session-properties which can be accessed through Applications => Preferences => Sessions to set your session to be saved automatically.

You can also use the command gnome-session-save to save the session immediately without logging off.
