Issue:
Why will the osad service not start?
Resolution:

The osad service is run on client machines to enable the Red Hat Network (RHN) "Push" functionality.

The osad requires that the Satellite hostname configured on the client machine match the hostname of the the Satellite server, not just the DNS record for that server.

If the names do not match, you will see errors in /var/log/messages that look like this:

Jan 13 15:41:10 myclient osad: osad startup succeeded
Jan 13 16:07:55 myclient osad: osad shutdown failed
Jan 13 16:08:09 myclient osad: Server does not support TLS
Jan 13 16:08:09 myclient osad: osad startup succeeded

Here are examples of configurations that will NOT work:
  • Two Satellites, named sat1.yourdomain.com and sat2.yourdomain.com
  • A DNS record that points the name satellite.yourdomain.com to one or the other Satellite
  • Client(s) configured to fetch updates from satellite.yourdomain.com
