How do I run samba in a debug mode?

Release found: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

Resolution:
To run Samba in debug mode follow the steps below:

  1. Edit /etc/samba/smb.conf
  2. Add the line below, under the line starting with log file 
    log level = 3/5
  3. Save the file.
  4. Restart the samba service 
    # service smb restart

Now the log will be generated under /var/log/samba directory.
