Issue:
How can I reconfigure my video card and monitor settings if I can no longer start the X Window System in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3?
Resolution:
In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, from the command line type:
redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig
  1. If you cannot start the X Window System and you have only a black screen, it may be necessary to press [CTL]+[ALT]+[F1] to get to command line.
  2. Login as root and enter init 3. This should stop any currently running instances of XFree86.
  3. Then run redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig. This will bring up a small version of XFree86 that will allow you to reconfigure your video card and monitor settings. If in doubt, leave the settings at their defaults. You can always go back later and reconfigure using the same steps.
  4. Once you are finished with the reconfiguration, press OK.
  5. Finally, again at the command line, enter init 5 and XFree86 should start normally.
