Issue:
After a routine update, why are no fonts displayed on the login window and no text appears (echo's) while typing a username or password? (All Icons/Menus appear on the desktop, but no text under them.)
Resolution:
Release Found: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 4.

Symptoms:
  • The initial KDE/GNOME login screen provides a block for typing Username/Password, while typing you cannot see text.

  • If you are logged in already, then no text appears on desktop or menus after update, icons are visible.

This would occur in systems which are set to automatically update using up2date.

Solution:

This is a bug which has been observed after the release of Update 4 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. Red Hat is aware of the problem and we are working to resolve it. To get information related to this bug or to submit additional details to it, see bug 143486 in Bugzilla.

Workaround: To fix this issue, login from a virtual terminal (for example, by pressing [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [F2] key combination), login as root, then change file permissions as follows:

# chmod 644 /etc/pango/<arch>-redhat-linux-gnu/pango.modules

Note: It is required to replace <arch> with the proper architecture of your system.

The text problem is due to incorrect permissions set on the pango.modules file during the update of the system.
