Issue:
I cannot get Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 4 to recognize the Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives on my Dell Precision 670. I have tried loading drivers from Dell but this does not work either. On Updates and 2,3 the devices are recognized. Is there a workaround to this issue?
Resolution:
Release Found: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, Update 4

Symptom: When attempting to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, Update 4, the installer loads the ata_piix driver but fails to find any drives.

The following error message may be displayed:
An error has occurred - no valid devices were found

Resolution: This issue has been resolved with a kernel update. This fix is now available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 5 and above. Update the kernel accordingly.

Previous Workaround: Install the operating system using either Update 2 or Update 3 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which properly detects the Serial ATA devices. Once the operating system is installed, the system can be then be brought up to Update 4 by using the up2date utility.

Note: The Serial ATA issue is present in the Update 4 kernel. It is suggested that if you update the system to Update 4 that you not upgrade the kernel until the fix is released.
