Issue:
Why do I get the error 'chroot cannot execute /bin/sh: Exec format error' when I use CD number one or the rescue CD to boot and run the chroot command?
Resolution:

This can happen if the rescue environment's compiled architecture does not match the installed system's architecture.

Make sure that the CD image you use to start the rescue environment matches the installed architecture of the system. For example, Red Hat Enterprise Linux has CD images available for x86_64, i386, iSeries, zSeries and Itanium. You may be able to boot from an alternative architecture that does not match your current installation.

Depending on the version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux you are using, a rescue environment may be available by booting from CD number one and using the arguments 'linux rescue' at the prompt or by using a dedicated rescue CD.

Regardless of whether you use a dedicated rescue CD or CD number one from your installation media, it must match the installed system's architecture to be able to run the chroot command successfully.
