Issue:
What versions of Java™ and Tomcat can I run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS version 4?
Resolution:

Either of two JVM's can be downloaded from Red Hat Network (RHN) for Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4. Both are version 1.4.2. The two upstream maintainers for these packages are BEA and IBM, respectively. The main package names for these JVM's are:

  • java-1.4.2-bea
  • java-1.4.2-ibm

To download these packages, you must register your system with RHN and subscribe it to the "Extras" channel; then you can simply use the up2date command to install the packages as you would any other package.

The Tomcat package is available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 through the Application Server child channel. The most recent version of Tomcat being built for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, as of this writing, is version 5.0.30.
