Issue:
Where is the .pid file for an OpenLDAP server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4?
Resolution:

Release Found: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 prior to Update 6

Symptom: OpenLDAP server does not create /var/run/slapd.pid

Solution: Update to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 6

The OpenLDAP server in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 prior to Update 6 had a bug (#244687), which causes the .pid file not being created during the server startup.

OpenLDAP in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 6 is fixed and creates /var/run/openldap/slapd.pid during the startup.

Please note that default OpenLDAP server configuration file has changed as part of the bugfix. It will be saved as /etc/openldap/slapd.conf.rpmnew during the update process in case the slapd.conf file has been changed. Check changes in pidfile and argsfile parameters there and update the slapd.conf file appropriately after the update.
