Prior to Version 5, subscription numbers were sometimes used to activate a subscription, but they were not used in the installation process. Beginning with Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5, subscription numbers can be entered during the installation process, and include the added functionality of enabling the installation of the full set of supported packages included with a subscription. These numbers are not used with other Red Hat products such as Red Hat Cluster Suite or Red Hat Global File System, (GFS).
If I upgrade from Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 2.1, 3, or 4 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, where can I find appropriate subscription numbers to use during installation?
Visit your Customer Center page: https://www.redhat.com/wapps/support/protected/subscriptions.html
Or, contact Red Hat Customer Service: http://www.redhat.com/about/contact/directory.html#custservice
I want to upgrade from a subscription of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform. What happens to the subscription number for the original purchase?
The existing subscription number will be deactivated and a new subscription number will be created.
I have subscription numbers from my previous purchases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux that I never activated. Do those subscription numbers still work?
Yes. Subscription numbers from previous purchases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux that have not yet been activated, can be activated here: http://redhat.com/activate
For more information on Subscription Numbers, see the FAQ.
